The new global “BioEconomy” emerging from advances in biotechnology currently represents over 4,200 companies, US $20 billion in research and development per year and earnings of over $60 billion annually in product revenues.
From a national perspective, biotechnology helps Canada compete internationally and enables exportation of Canadian products to new markets by creating value-added industries in the health, pharmaceuticals, agriculture and natural resources sectors. The Government of Canada continues to commit itself to being a world leader in biotechnology with funding levels approaching $861 million on biotechnology scientific activities.
